A quick guide to how each system moves the wheels.

BEV

A battery powers the electric motor. No combustion engine. Recharge from an external power source.

ELECTRIC DRIVE · NO ENGINE

EREV/REEV

02

Range-extended electric

Plug in to charge the battery. The engine drives a generator to charge the battery and supply electric drive. Only the e-motor drives the wheels.

ELECTRIC DRIVE · NO ENGINE-TO-WHEEL LINK

PHEV

03

Series–parallel plug-in example

Plug in to charge the battery. In series mode, the engine drives a generator. In parallel mode, a clutch allows engine and e-motor drive.

EV · SERIES · PARALLEL DRIVE

Simplified layouts. PHEV shows a series–parallel example; architectures and operating modes vary by vehicle.
